The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale (SSHS) has been used by government agencies around the world, including the U.S. National Hurricane Center, for emergency response such as pre-hurricane evacuations and post-hurricane relief operations. However, this scale has its drawbacks, and more accurate indices of hurricane intensity and damage potential are needed. This website proposes and presents such indices: the Hurricane Intensity Index (HII, a better indicator of hurricane/tropical cyclone intensity), and the Hurricane Hazard Index (HHI) and the Hurricane storm Surge Index (HSI) (better indicators of potential damage). It compares them to the SSHS, for both current and some past hurricanes.
